It’s officially less than one week from school starting and honestly, I’m feeling surprisingly ready for the routine and structure school provides. However, this semester is going to be a bit more hectic than my usual school and work routine since I’ll also be working as an intern at AHO for my needed field placement units. All this, AND also applying to graduate schools, which from what I’ve heard can be quite daunting. Taking on this busy schedule has been made easier with Zara, AHO’s founder and executive director, being so flexible and continuously reminding me that she is here to support me in whatever way she can. She also reminded me of this again yesterday during our meeting when I wasn’t feeling my best – I had a bad chronic illness day- so having Zara’s support, felt like a weight was lifted off my shoulders.

In other news, that poster I’ve been writing about for like a month now…well it’s finally
done! I’ve enclosed a photo with me holding it in this blog. Creating it was much more
complicated than expected. In the process, I learned a lot about Microsoft Word as (I’m a
Google Docs user.) At the top of this blog is picture proof of what I created for AHO to use
for their community and school outreach events. The process almost outsmarted me, but I
figured it out in the end, and I’m happy to say that Zara was very pleased with the poster!

At today’s meeting, Zara and I also got to chat about future speaking events at COM,
specifically for COM’s field placement class, where I will be speaking about my intern
experience at AHO. We also discussed Marin schools starting, and the AHO booth that will
be at both College of Marin’s student welcome-back days on COM’s two campuses;
Kentfield and Ignacio. A few of AHO’s previous and current youth will be there to meet and
support new and returning students and to let them know about how much AHO’s
personalized and comprehensive resources have helped them achieve their goals.

If you are around the Kentfield campus on Monday, August 26 from 12 noon to 2 pm or the Novato Ignacio campus on Thursday, August 18th 11:30 am to 1 pm…. I hope you will come and say hi!

Between school events and meeting and working with another new AHO youth, there are
plenty more things for me to continue to participate in and learn about in my internship at
AHO. I am excited to see how this upcoming fall semester goes.

Happy new school year,
Kayla
